Exploration and Survey

View of Hkakabo Razi National Park, MyanmarBased on the knowledge of our field staff, and through the use of maps developed by the WCS Living Landscapes Program, the earth's remaining wild areas are being identified.  Selection of sites for exploration are based on the relevance of the surveys to existing long-term WCS field programs and on the interest and political will of the governments concerning follow up conservation activities.  Priority is being given to unexplored areas that might harbor populations or individuals of vulnerable species.

The purpose of this program is to:

  • Identify and explore the earth's remaining unprotected wild areas with the aim of surveying wildlife and habitat diversity.
  • Assess the status of critically endangered species or wildlife populations.
  • Establish new protected areas.
